POSTURE PROGRAM
At this clinic, we take a unique approach to your condition. The posture program
begins with a detailed initial history and physical assessment which evaluates
your posture, range of motion and, specifically, tests any area of complaint.
This program is a therapy based on science and works from special x-rays that
will be requisitioned following your initial visit. This unique series of x-rays
confirm our diagnosis of your postural problem. The x-rays allow the
chiropractors to design a program to address your individual needs and determine
which specific exercises are necessary to improve the curvature of your spine.
Depending on your condition and the length of your custom program,
re-evaluations and possible new x-rays will be necessary to accurately determine
your progress to date.
SCOLIOSIS
What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a curvature in the
spine that can be subtle or dramatic. Unless there has been specific trauma to
the spinal structure or related spinal nerves, it becomes difficult to precisely
identify the cause of scoliosis. One prominent theory in the chiropractic
community has to do with the loss of normal functional curve in the spine.
Typically, the spine gains its strength and stability from having curves in the
neck, mid back and low back curves. It is theorized that loss of these normal
curves allows the spine to be less strong and unstable. To regain strength, the
spine creates its own curves in a different plane. As these curves become
bigger, they create scoliosis.
Our approach to fixing this problem is to restore the normal curves in the neck
and low back. This, combined with specific exercise, re-establishes enough
stability to allow the body to let go of the improper curves. To help the body
return to a normal posture various techniques, exercise and weighting procedures
are used. In comparison to the regular posture program, the treatments are
generally more intense as more issues are being addressed.
Both programs will start off with the following fundamentals:
In this program, it is essential that you become an active participant in
restoring your posture and health. Specifically, aside from the adjustments that
you will receive in the clinic, you will be instructed on exercises to help you
attain your goals. Wobbling is one exercise that mobilizes (loosens) your spine.
It provides a light stretch to supportive muscles and ligaments and ultimately
encourages rehydration of your vertebral disks. Head weights worn on your
forehead help restore the curve in your neck and aid in the strengthening of
weak neck musculature. Spinal molding is another way to help restore curves in
both your neck and low back. When you are comfortable with spinal molding,
exercises will be prescribed to strengthen your muscles. Please realize it takes
time to reach your goals.
Each visit requires approximately 40-45 minutes, and, in between the visits, it
is imperative that supportive home exercises be done to help maintain
correction. As we see progression through these initial stages, specific
weighting procedures will be applied. Specific tools and exercise equipment will
also be used in the office. Please realize that it takes time to reach your
goals. Progress will be followed by evaluating postural and mechanical change as
well as by x-ray comparison.
The posture rehabilitation program is based on preventative care, not
symptomatic care. Our goal is to restore proper function to both the spine and
extremities. Dr. Karen proctor and Dr. James Fung are concerned with problems
you may encounter in the future as well as the past and present. As you
progress, your treatment and exercise program change according to your needs.
Our focus is to restore your spinal curves, rebalance your muscles, and,
ultimately, to give you the necessary tools to maintain good spinal health.
